WHO IS VOLUNTEER WILDFIRE SERVICES?
100% Volunteer. 100% Passionate.
The most amazing aspect of the Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS) a not for profit company, is that the entire unit is made up of unpaid volunteers. Wildfire firefighting is a dangerous activity and the safety of our members is taken very seriously, through training, purchasing the best gear we can afford and ensuring the mode of transport is the safest possible within our budget.
Each year wildfires sweep through our reserves, and although a necessary part of the ecosystem, fires are becoming increasingly frequent and devastating.
Preserving a stable and diverse Fynbos ecosystem is critical in managing the run-off from the winter rains, which forms the backbone of the Western Cape’s water supply. This precious system is now under threat and the VWS, in operation since 1999, is recognised as a vital tool to aid in the protection of this asset.
It takes an exceptional breed of person to commit to this unit, though they come from all walks of life. This is especially true when volunteering one’s own time, the only reward being the satisfaction of a job well done at the end of the day, and a meal made by the wonderful support teams.

WHAT PROJECT WILL THE FUNDS SUPPORT?
The funding will go towards ensuring our members are correctly equipped with Personal Protective Equipment for battling wildfire in the extreme conditions they face.
Each year we need to equip our qualified new recruits with Personal Protective Equipment and replace worn out equipment for existing members to keep them safe on the fire line, this is an ongoing expense and this funding will allow us to ensure we can maintain this into the future.
