What is “OPERATION SMILE”?

Operation Smile is an international children’s medical charity that performs safe, effective cleft lip and cleft palate surgery, and delivers postoperative and ongoing medical therapies to children in low and middle-income countries. As the largest volunteer surgical charity of its kind, Operation Smile is a global leader in the field of cleft research to determine the causation of cleft lip and cleft palate — its treatment, prevention, and eradication.

With a presence in more than 60 countries, Operation Smile maintains a network of more than 5,400 medical volunteers from over 80 countries. As a leading NGO, Operation Smile is a mobile force of top credentialed professionals dedicated to improving the health and lives of children. Since its founding in 1982, Operation Smile has provided more than 250,000 free surgeries to children and young adults born with cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities.

Operation Smile South Africa was founded in 2006, Operation Smile South Africa (OSSA) joined Operation Smile as its 25th partner country. Based in Cape Town, OSSA medical volunteers provide free surgeries throughout Southern and Central Africa while providing medical educational and advanced training to promote sustainability and self-sufficiency throughout the region.


What project will the funds support?

• Establish National Databases and Birth Registries via provincial mobilization campaigns

• Establish Surgical Centers of Excellence in DRC and Madagascar for obstetric fistula care and craniofacial surgery

• Expand academic exchanges; strengthen university partnerships for research, training

• Expand year-round cleft care opportunities and clinic access

• Eliminate waiting time for children older than age 2 who need primary cleft surgery

• Extend community outreach programs in remote areas

• Improve maternal/child survival rates

• Integrate critical midwifery skills training programs

• Contribute medical professionals, skills and equipment for disaster relief response

• Collaborate with National Health Institutes, Red Cross and NGO partners

More on Operation Smile?

Aside from providing free and safe surgery; plans to renovate hospitals, Operation Smile also focuses on education programmes and sustainability. Since inception, OSSA has provided training to more than 500 healthcare Workers (517) in South Africa. Training outcomes of this course include the ability to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), recognise life threatening emergencies, use an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), and relieve choking in a timely and effective manner.

 How will the funds be used in furthering this project?

Proposed funding will leverage an economy of change throughout Africa’s healthcare infrastructure. Operation Smile will be able to fund thousands of surgical treatments, conduct regular medical training for nursing/anesthesia/life support/nutrition/speech therapies, and lead ongoing strategic education programs.
